What have we learned about the Basque region and people?

From the short time we've been in the Basque region of Spain, it is clear the Basque take great pride in their culture, language and identity. Inder, a young staff member at one of our hostels, beamed with pride as he explained the meaning of his name (strength) in Basque, the intentionality of Basque words (moon=dead light) and Basque games (Hand Pelota). He explained children in school learn Basque, Spanish, and English right up to grade 12. From what we have seen in places such as New Zealand and Wales, ensuring language longevity through schools is a key to preserving culture. When we asked what he thinks people in other areas of Spain think/feel about the Basque people. His quick reply, "I don't care what anyone things about us. We are Basque."

Many Basque we have met feel a connection to marginalized or oppressed groups in the world such as Quebecois and Palestinians. They feel proudly distinct and unique.
